2023 Year in Review
I extend my sincerest thanks to the Board and our Executive Director for the collaborative effort and time invested in advancing our mission. This year has been marked by significant achievements, and I'm pleased to report that the goals outlined in our current Strategic Plan are being realized.
The accomplishments of the Board this past year are noteworthy:
Strengthening Relationships: Our association's relationships and visibility have grown and strengthened through meaningful engagements with industry partners such as the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Architects, Heavy Civil Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, Association of Engineering Technicians and Technologists of Newfoundland Labrador, and the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Government Collaboration: With the assistance of First Lake Consultants, we successfully conducted meetings with multiple provincial government ministers. These meetings have paved the way for the establishment of a Procurement Working Group with the Department of Municipal Infrastructure, scheduled to commence in early 2024.
National Collaboration: We continue to collaborate with other Member Organizations across the country and ACEC Canada, particularly in addressing the requirements surrounding French translation on Federal Government projects. You can read a full update here.
Financial Governance: Efforts to modernize our accounting system have been underway, including the engagement of a bookkeeper to ensure sound fiscal governance by the board. We aim to provide members with alternative methods of payment besides cheques in the new year.
Professional Development: Collaborating with fellow Atlantic Associations, we offered Professional Development Courses to further enhance the skills and knowledge of our members.
Successful AGM: Our Annual General Meeting was a resounding success, marked by high attendance, invigorating dialogue, and the presentation of two new awards—the Future Leaders Award and the Engineering Excellence Award. I encourage all members to participate in these awards and showcase the exceptional talent within our member firms. You can see all the award winners here.
Fee Guideline Documents: We developed and issued the Recommended Fee Guideline Documents for 2023, which we hope will serve as a valuable guide for members when developing fees for their work. Please share this document within your organizations and with non-member firms. Download Recommended Fee Guideline.
As we move into the new year, we continue to welcome employees of members to participate in the Membership and Governance Committees. If you are interested, please reach out to Christy at [email protected].
Our Future Leaders group plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our industry and association. I urge members to promote this group to engineers and technologists under 40 or with less than 10 years of industry experience. For more information, contact Michael at [email protected] or Christy at [email protected].
I also extend our deepest thanks to three directors— Ivan Hynes, Dennis Newhook and Vanessa Barry for their service to the board. Two positions have been filled, and a notice will be sent in the new year to fill the remaining vacancy. We encourage you to consider joining our board.
As the year comes to a close, I wish you and your loved ones prosperity in the new year and joyous holidays. Take this time to rest, recharge mentally, and cherish the moments with those around you.
With Kindest Regards and Thanks,
